Why is there a gap in the rod sections?
One of the most common misunderstandings relating to rod ferrules is the spigot pattern vs tip over pattern. Steffen Brothers original glass rods feature spigot pattern ferrules. When assembled, spigot ferrules have a gap of 1/8" to 3/8" between rod sections. This prevents the sections from rubbing against each other and allows for future wear*. Spigot ferrules do not need wax, but a light coat of hard wax can be used. Wax should be applied sparingly and buffed into the male ferrule and all excess should be removed to prevent collection of debris. All Steffen Bros original glass rods have spigot ferrules made from the same S-glass material on the same mandrels.
Rod action + feel
While action and feel is subjective. We have designed our glass and graphite rods with the following in mind:
Our original Steffen Brothers Heritage Glass is slightly quicker than medium glass action and very pleasant to cast. If this is your first glass rod, and you have only cast mass produced graphite rods, then these may be perceived as slow. Don't let the reserve power fool you ;)
Steffen Brothers graphite fly rods can be described as moderate rods. This means they have great feel in the back cast for relaxed dry fly casting. They are more crisp than the glass rods and have excellent recovery (no wobble). When more line is let out, folks are suprised in the resever power and crispness of them. They are some of the finest graphite rods on the market.
Care tips
Store your fly rod completely dry and clean. Completely air dry your fly rod and place it in the cloth bag and tube before storing. The best way to stow a rod over long periods is to hang it in its bag. Our rod bags all have a hang tag designed for this purpose. Inspect ferrules, wax or clean gently if needed. Take the rod apart when you are done fishing to avoid stuck ferrules. Prolonged connection in salt or changing temperatures can lead to stuck rod sections.
Made to order timeline
Typically made to order, custom built fly rods come with a bit of a wait. If blanks are in stock, you can expect between 5-8weeks based on customizations. If the blanks are not in stock, it can take between 8-10weeks.
